Endodontic treatment for teenagers, step by step

This dentistry field focuses on lesions in the dental pulp: prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the dental pulp, roots and periapical area (for example, treatment for a pus bag).

The goal is to treat and to obturate the root canal system. Endodontics could be seen as the foundation of restorative dentistry, because it heals the tooth from the inside. Each tooth is normally formed of the dental pulp (on the inside – the pulp cavity and the root canal system) which also contains blood vessels, nerves and tissue similar to the one under the skin. When bacteria reaches this level – because of  deep decay, large dental fractures or as an effect of periodontal disease – there will be inflammation, the pulp will be destroyed and pus will accumulate in the wound. This situation often causes unbearable pain, but it can also develop unnoticed; in the worst case, the accumulated pus can cause diseases such as sinusitis, endocarditis, meningitis, septicemia.

When there is inflammation in the dental pulp, endodontic treatment is the best solution for saving the tooth. In the past dentists would have extracted a tooth with serious pulp inflammation or decay. However, today, the innovative procedures available in the endodontics department, such as using the dental microscope, can easily save such a tooth.

5 symptoms which indicate endodontic issues

  • You have continuous pain, with no obvious reason
  • Your tooth is sensitive to high/low temperature
  • Your tooth is fractured and the dental pulp is exposed
  • Your gums are sensitive when you chew or when you touch them
  • The color of the tooth changes
  • Drainage and sensitivity in the lymph nodes, jawbones and gums

If these symptoms are ignored and left untreated, the health of the tooth and jawbone can be affected in a very short time, unless root canal treatment is performed rapidly.

The endodontic treatment is a dental procedure which can be performed on both permanent and temporary teeth (young children). It is important to keep temporary teeth healthy, because they keep the place where permanent teeth will protrude and grow. When a child prematurely loses a temporary tooth, the teeth next to it will shift and block the permanent tooth during its growth causing malpositions.

When is endodontic treatment recommended?

Endodontic treatment is necessary when: the dental pulp is inflamed or infected due to complicated decays, multiple dental procedures, dental trauma – crown fractures, pulp exposure – or any other lesions. Usually, most teeth in a similar situation can be saved through endodontic treatment.

Tooth extraction is necessary only if:

  • The root is severely damaged or fractured
  • The tooth does not have an adequate bone structure in the jawbone
  • The tooth cannot be restored
  • The root canals cannot be reached
  • Infection reached the bone or gums

What happens after the endodontic treatment has been performed?

The teen patient might feel pain in the treated area for a while, which can be relieved with appropriate medication, recommended by the dentist.
