How to wear the dental appliances
- If you have a fixed appliance, you have to pay great attention to your oral hygiene. Your teeth and gums have to be clean and you will have to use a special brush to clean your brackets.
- You will have to stop unhealthy habits which can affect your oral health.
- Don’t crack with your teeth hard or sticky foods, and don’t chew on foods with high sugar level (chewing gum, toffee etc.).
- Do not bite fruit or boiled corn on cobs. Cut your fruit and pizza in small pieces and remove any hard or crunchy parts.
Make an appointment for a professional hygiene session at least once in 3-4 months.
- Wear the mobile appliance as instructed by your orthodontist.
- You might feel a slight hypersalivation (excessive saliva) or difficulties in swallowing during the first 7-10 days of wearing the mobile appliance. These difficulties will disappear in time if the appliance is correctly worn.
- You can activate your mobile appliance with a special key that comes with your appliance. Rotate it in the direction shown by the arrow, according to your orthodontist’s instructions.
CAUTION: don’t activate the appliance after a rest period, for it will cause pain.
- Clean your appliance with water and soap every time you remove it from your mouth. Use a brush with hard bristles and clean the margins and the spaces between fragments and screws thoroughly. Rinse the appliance with warm water. You can also use special effervescent cleansing tablets.
- Clean your mouth each time before wearing the appliance. Use additional hygiene methods: dental floss and mouthwash. We recommend a professional hygiene session at least once in 3-4 months or when needed.
- You must come for a check-up if you notice problems such as: not being able to correctly apply/wear the appliance as the doctor instructed, instability of the appliance in your mouth, damaged appliance, any kind of pain.
For a quick recovery of correct pronunciation, we recommend diction practice (read loud and slow, pronounce the words correctly and repeat the ones that seem to be difficult).
Guidelines for dental appliances
Wearing a dental appliance might have been a spontaneous decision for you, which you are very proud of. But there are many teenagers who meet various difficulties or unpleasant situations while getting used to their new dental accessory.
Our specialists’ advice is to cheer up and tell your orthodontist all your troubles and discontents (pain in the gums or any other discomfort) before taking a bad decision.
We also suggest that, at the beginning of your treatment, you replace hard foods with soft foods, which you can easily eat as soon as the appliance has been installed.
And, like all other accessories, if you want to make sure that it has the wanted effect, you have to go for the regular check-up and be examined by your orthodontist. The dentist will let you know everything’s OK! and will help you prevent any future problems.
We are looking forward to meeting you!
